We're all aware that when we have a goal and share it with others, the results are much larger than we could ever have imagined. Local scout Steven Hennefer saw this in action as he worked on his Eagle Scout project over the last couple of months. Steven's plan was to collect items for the animals at the Douglas County Animal Shelter and make 75 gift baskets to give to a new owner when they adopt a pet. Steven and his sister, Ashley, distributed fliers around the Carson Valley and we asked you for your help in making this project a success. And what a success it was! Steven's original goal of 75 baskets was far exceeded due to the "overwhelming support from my family, friends and community," Hennefer beamed.
In working with Douglas Animal Welfare Group and the shelter, they decided it would be better to have the items in large bins that could be easily transported to off-site adoption days. This way the new owners could pick what they needed or wanted to go with their new pet. "We had tons of collars, leashes, cat toys, dog toys, treats, grooming supplies, two bins of food bowls - about 9 bins in all. Just loaded with items! In addition, I was able to purchase about 250 pounds of dry dog food. I didn't know I was going to be able to do this but I received some cash donations. I also was able to buy cans of wet cat food," Steven explained.
In addition to thanking his sister, Ashley, and parents, Wayne and Paula, Steven said he couldn't have completed the project without the help of his friend and Troop 411's Senior Patrol Leader, Austin Bachman, as well as the rest of the troop for collecting donations. "Thank you, Casey Braun of Curves for being the collection center and the members of DAWG for their guidance. Douglas County Community Television also did a spot on my project for one of their local shows," Steven continued, and "a big thank-you to the Carson Valley for donating items to help the animals."
Now that the project is complete, Steven will be presenting before the Eagle Scout review board and they will make the final determination. Steven said he completed his last merit badge, personal management, on Oct. 31 and will go before the board in January.
The results will be published in February or March.
Steven will be a tremendous asset to the prestigious Eagle Scout community. I'm betting on an approval, aren't you?
Congratulations, Steven, on this monumental achievement. We are looking forward to your next community project.
Have a Ramblin' good week.
