EDITOR:
I voted today as I do every year, understanding the sacrifice honorable people have made for me to do so. The last two years (today), as I was exiting the polling station I was given a harsh attitude from the (same) Douglas County officer crowding the exit door. I see him smile at others, but as I exit he puffs up and frowns at me.
I would be considered a financially poorer resident of Douglas County (and it might be obvious from my attire), but I do not expect to be harrassed at my polling place. When I called the sheriffs office to complain they told me the officer must be posted at the door and they hung up on me.
I suggest the officer be posted further from the door so his precence is noticed, but citizens do not have to address him as they leave ( as I do with all people who are within one foot distance from me ).
I am not asking this officer be kind to me or give me any kind of recognition, I am simply asking he let me exit my assigned polling place without the obvious negative attitude and challenge.
It's called respect for the citizens of Douglas County.
One or two steps back from the door is all that is needed.
