Nice work on election

Local elections barely registered on the nasty meter in campaign season, something we think that our candidates should be proud of.

With the amount of mud flying in the state and national elections, the few tiny specks of muck that took flight in Douglas County aren't barely worth mentioning.

That's not to say that those folks who were serious about their campaigns didn't fight hard, going door to door, talking to voters and touching all the bases necessary to make it go.

We think that shows up in the election numbers.

There were five elections that were too close to call until the last precincts were counted.

Those included four countywide races, including both county commissioner races, the race for school board and the airport weight ordinance revision. The fifth race was a tie for third place on the Kingsbury General Improvement District. It doesn't get any closer than that.

School Board trustee Sharla Hales managed to win a third term by 43 votes. Hales was one of the few Valley residents to win a third term, with at least three other long-time officials finding themselves out in the cold.

Now it's time to learn about the new people who will take office in January, and clean up the mess, both real and psychic, left by nine months of campaigning.

Congratulations to the victors, and our thanks to everyone who participated.
