Time for food closet

EDITOR:

It is getting to be that time of year again, the holidays are approaching. The Halloween candy has been consumed, fall is here in its colorful display of our local trees and hope glimmers, with the elections behind us. It is the time when we begin to make our holiday plans. Will we travel, or have friends or relatives visit? Sound familiar?

Along with plans and holiday decorating we may find our selves being prompted by the spirit of generosity. The sounds of holiday music fill the stores, the ringing of a bell or the displays in store windows turn our attention to our fellow community members.

This community has been outstanding. The hearts and wallets of Carson Valley members have been opened to those who are struggling. Individuals, churches, and service organizations have extended graciously helping hands, thanks to their many volunteers and people just like you. That's good news. Unfortunately the last couple of years have been extremely hard on the area. Nevada's unemployment rate is the highest in the nation. Sadly many of the people who can generally "get by" the rest of the year become overwhelmed this time of year.

Here at the Carson Valley Food Closet we are planning for the holidays as well.

This is the time of year when we gear up to provide holiday meals for those who will not otherwise be able to have one. The good news is we provided over 1,100 families with holiday meals. We are expecting to meet this same need, if not more due to the current economic down turn. We are in desperate need of turkeys and other holiday meal fixings to be able to provide these dinners.

Will you help us meet these needs? As you make your holiday plans please consider once again reaching out to our community members in need. Your generosity is greatly appreciated.

Donations of food or monetary donations can be made at the Food Closet, located at 1255 Waterloo Lane, Gardnerville, NV 89410

We are open 12:30-4 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from Drop offs at other times can be arranged with a phone call (775) 782-3711.

Thank you, and happy holidays.
