The Douglas County Senior Center hosts their 11th annual USO Veterans Day celebration, 10:30 a.m. to noon today, at the senior center, 2300 Meadow Lane, Gardnerville.
The event is open to the public and honors local men and women who served and continue to serve in the Armed Forces. Sheriff Ron Pierini is master of ceremonies, and speakers include Lionel Motta, Adjutant of the American Legion Department of Nevada, and Staff Sgt. Todd Loreman.
The Douglas High School Jazz Band will perform, and there will be a flag presentation made by the Carson Valley VFW Post No. 8583. Students from Mrs. Jacobsen's Gardnerville Elementary class will sing a song and recite a poem.
Lunch will follow the ceremony at noon. On the menu is fried chicken, cole slaw, mashed potatoes and gravy, corn on the cob, biscuits, and apple pie a la mode.
Veterans' memorabilia will be displayed in the lobby of the senior center.
Veterans and widows of veterans are invited to wear their medals and uniforms.
