Marines will gather in the East Fork Justice of the Peace courtroom today to observe the 235th birthday of the U.S. Marine Corps.

The ceremony features coffee and birthday cake. Justice of the Peace Steve McMorris said the Marines will introduce themselves before the cake is cut.

Marines and family members are welcome at the observation which takes place upstairs at noon in the Judicial and Law Enforcement Center in Minden.

Gardnerville Elementary School has invited veterans to attend an the school's annual Veterans Day assembly 9:15 a.m. today.

The Douglas County Senior Center will be hosting their 11th annual USO Veterans Day Celebration 10:30 to noon today. The senior center is located at 2300 Meadow Lane in Gardnerville. Lunch will follow the ceremony at noon.

Local, county, state and federal offices will be closed for Veterans Day on Thursday, as will schools and financial institutions.

A benefit concert for veterans and their families will be hosted by the Tahoe-Douglas Elks Lodge 7 p.m. Thursday at St. Gall's Parish Hall in Gardnerville. The concert features Bobby Freeman's Flaming Rockin Piano. Freeman is donating his service and equipment for the event. Carson Valley United Methodist Church honors Veterans Day at the 8:30 a.m. and 10:20 a.m. services Sunday with a liturgical dance performed by students from the All About Dance studio of Minden. Also on the program is the Chancel Choir performing the American trilogy of "Dixie," "Battle Hymn of the Republic" and "All My Trials."
