An 18-year-old Douglas High School senior announced his candidacy for county commission on Saturday.

Aaron Michael Sims, who turned 18 in August, spoke in Minden.

He claims to be the youngest candidate for a countywide seat in Nevada history.

"I am running as a conservative Republican with constitutional values," he said. "I do not plan on making this a negative campaign and I do want to thank my opponent for his years of service and I commend him for owning his on business all these years, the very type of business I plan to fight for in this campaign."

Sims spoke for about 30 minutes about his plan for Douglas County in front of a small group of residents at 88 Cups Coffee/Tea in Minden.

Sims lives in County Commissioner Greg Lynn's district and was a supporter of Dave Nelson, who was defeated by Lynn in the 2008 primary.

Sims won't actually be able to file for the office until March 2012, assuming the Legislature leaves the primary in June. If no one else files for the seat, Lynn and Sims could make the general election in November. If any other candidate files, they would face off in primary open only to Douglas Republicans.
