Herbert "Marty" M. Bullock

A private family service will be held for Herbert "Marty" M. Bullock, 81, who died suddenly at his home in Minden on Nov. 7, 2010.

Born Sept. 5, 1929, in Los Angeles, Mr. Bullock grew up in Glendale, Calif. He attended Hoover High School, where he was student body president, Boy's League president, and Leadership of Cabinet.

He loved sports and played football, basketball, baseball and ran track.

He served in the National Guard until he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1952, where he was an intelligence photo and radar officer. He retired after attaining the rank of captain.

He graduated from UCLA Law School with a bachelor of arts degree in history.

He was surfing at Mission Beach, Calif., when he met his future wife, Susan, an Omaha, Neb., resident who was visiting her sister.

The couple engaged in a long-distance relationship for four years until 1956, when they married. He started out as a stockbroker in Los Angeles and the couple moved to Ventura in 1957, where he was an investment counselor. In 1987, he moved to Minden where he continued working as an investment advisor until his death.

He loved games, following the horses, reading and was a prolific letter-writer. He mastered wilderness survival training at age 60, won the World Horse Handicapping Tournament and World Blackjack Tournament in Las Vegas; and solved the daily crossword puzzle in pen.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Susan; daughters Debra (Jay) Shelton, Amy (Dennis) Christian, Jennifer Taylor; grandchildren Kyle, Josie, Savanah, Hunter, Jasmine, Holden and Riley.

Memorial donations may be made to Wells Fargo Bank, account No. 3013866219 for the education of the two children in Mrs. Bullock's care.
