NDOT ready for winter weather

If the region is walloped by a monster winter storm beginning tonight as has been warned for the past week, the Nevada Department of Transportation is prepared to do its part in making the roads less treacherous.

NDOT Spokesman Scott Magruder said salt trucks, snow plows and drivers are at the ready.

"We've got a number of people on call. Our No. 1 priority is our higher elevations. Up to four feet is expected in the Mount Rose, Spooner Summit and Kingsbury areas," said Magruder. "They've got the snow blowers, they are going to sand and salt the roads as needed. We don't want to overdo it because we are very sensitive to the environment. But if the storm's really heavy the main deal is to get the blade on the asphalt and start getting snow off the road."

AAA reminds motorists that good brakes are crucial to keeping a vehicle under control when driving - especially on roads covered by rain, snow or ice. Motorists are encouraged to have a certified technician inspect their brakes to ensure they are ready for any slick roads that Mother Nature might throw at them
