The National Weather Service is telling people that the best plan for this weekend is to just stay home. According to a winter storm warning that starts 10 p.m. tonight and lasts through 10 a.m. Sunday, travel in the Sierra and portions of Western Nevada will be dangerous with significant delays and possible road closures. Forecasters are suggesting motorists change their travel plans to avoid driving through the Sierra this weekend.
The wind's not going too crazy right now, but there have been some stronger gusts, including 41 mph in Fish Springs at 11:30 p.m. last night. A wind advisory remains in effect until 4 p.m. today. Expect crosswinds of 15-30 mph, gusting to up to 65 mph. A high wind warning is in effect on Highway 395 through Washoe Valley. Expect that to get worse, no matter what happens with the snow.
There was a motorcycle accident on Johnson Lane between Highway 395 and Heybourne Road at about 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. The motorcyclist suffered a broken leg, according to the scanner. He was taken to Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center. The other driver was also taken for observation.
I'm going on vacation next week, so I'll be doing the morning report from home. Don't expect much more than the weather (which might be spectacular) and road reports, because I'll be in happy isolation.
