Rain started falling in Genoa at about 9 p.m. as a winter storm arrived in Western Nevada. Chains or four-wheel drive are required to cross Interstate 80 or highways 50 and 88 in the Sierra.

Snow tires or chains are required on Highway 50 over Spooner Summit and over Kingsbury Grade.

Motorists should be prepared to chain up when traveling in the mountains.

According to the National Weather Service, snow levels are expected to drop to the Valley floors late tonight.

Motorists should expect dangerous travel conditions and significant delays, including road closures. Forecasters are warning travelers to adjust their plans to avoid driving through the Sierra this weekend.

A winter storm warning started at 10 p.m. and is expected to last until 10 a.m. Sunday.
