The second wave of a winter storm arrived in Carson Valley this afternoon. Light snow started falling around 2 p.m., but most roads in the lower elevations were reasonably dry and without chain restrictions as of 5 p.m.

All three major thoroughfares through the Sierra, Interstate 80 and highways 50 and 88 require chains or four-wheel drive. Chains or snow tires are required over Kingsbury Grade and Spooner Summit.

The main force of tonight's storm is not expected to hit until around 10 p.m. About 3 inches of snow is expected to fall before 4 a.m. Another inch of snow should fall by the time the winter storm warning expires in the Valley 10 a.m. Sunday.

The Weather Service is expecting 3-6 inches more snow on the Valley floor by Sunday morning.

Snow accumulations in the Sierra are expected to be 1-3 feet above 7,000 feet and 12-18 inches below 7,000 feet.

A weather spotter in Minden reported 4 inches of snow fell over night Friday. About 3 inches of snow fell in Genoa.

At Lake Tahoe 9 inches of snow was reported at Glenbrook and 10 inches at Dagget Pass at the top of Kingsbury Grade.

Heavenly Ski Resort reported 18 inches of snow on Friday night.
