The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles is warning motorists about a vehicle warranty scam designed to look like it originated with the state agency.

Some motorists are receiving postcards which instruct them to log on to a web address that begins with "NV."

The postcard says, "An approval alert has been processed. Activate alert with secured login below."

DMV spokesman Tom Jacobs said the card lists a web address that refers to a telephone number with an 877-prefix. Calling that number results in a sales pitch for extended vehicle warranty insurance.

"The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles did not send out the card," Jacobs said. "The department's official website is www.dmvnv.com.
