Forecast for chilly Thanksgiving

Following today's snow squall, Carson Valley residents can expect clearer, colder weather Wednesday and into the Thanksgiving holiday.

According to the National Weather Service, the high temperature for today in Gardnerville will be 22 degrees Fahrenheit, with a frigid low Wednesday of 7 degrees. Turkey Day will bring warmer temperatures with a high of 38 degrees and a low of 23 degrees, and Friday's forecast isn't far off from the latter with a high of 38 degrees and a low of 27 degrees.

Easterly winds of up to 10 mph are expected Wednesday and Thursday. Winds will pick up again on Saturday, ushering in another chance of snow Saturday night.

Douglas County School District closed Zephyr Cove Elementary and Whittell High School at Lake Tahoe today for a snow day. Heavenly Mountain Resort reported 5 inches of new snow this morning, totaling 53 inches in the last week.

According to Minden weather watcher Stan Kapler, the storm over the weekend dumped 6 inches of snow in Minden, totaling .63 inches of moisture content.

Sheridan Acres weather watcher George Uebele reported 9.3 inches of snow in the Foothills over Saturday and Sunday, and .63 inches of moisture content for those two days plus Monday.

Safety officials continue to advise motorists to carry tire chains, food, water, blankets and a flashlight in their vehicles in case of an emergency.
