Dec. 3, 1915

The issue of the Record-Courier is printed and mailed Wednesday noon instead of on Friday, our regular publication day. The reason for this is that the editor and his wife could no longer resist the temptation of getting just one glimpse at the San Francisco exposition, before its lights go out Saturday, and accordingly, left for the bay city Wednesday afternoon.


80 years ago

Dec. 5, 1930

Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Montrose returned from Tonopah last Sunday. While in southern Nevada they made a trip to the three million dollar shack of Scotty, situated in Grape Vine canyon in the Funeral range bordering Death Valley. The party of visitors were permitted to enter the sanctum sanctorium or holy of holies of the great castle, a treat but few have thus far enjoyed.

Dec. 1, 1960

Open (non-pregnant) cows in the commercial beef herd are more of a liability this year than usual, states Rollie Weaver county agent, and ranchers would be wise to pregnancy-test their herds and sell those that are not going to produce a calf. Research shows that a heifer that is open as a 2-year-old must produce calves averaging 34 pounds more in weight throughout her remaining years to equal the production of those that produce a calf every year.

Nov. 28, 1985

Photo caption. Unbelievable growth. Last week School Superintendent Greg Betts explained to the Carson Valley Chamber of Commerce why the district is seeking voter approval for a $17.7 million school bond package. The chart indicates the rapid student population growth the Valley has experienced since 1970.

Nov. 29, 2000

The one and only public access point from the Carson Valley to the Sierra Nevada will be dedicated Thursday. After four years of earnest work, the Faye-Luther Canyon trailhead is already getting plenty of business, and those who worked on the project want everyone to know it's finished. The American Land Conservancy helped secure the trailhead property, which includes parking for 10 to 12 cars and signs advising of rules for the area.
