Call for artists

The Carson Valley Art Association's Scholarship Benefit Show is Nov. 4-7 in the CVIC Hall in Minden. This is a judged show with cash prizes and ribbons awarded in seven media, Best in Show and People's Choice.

Receiving is 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 4. Show hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Nov. 5, with an artists' reception with snacks and beverages at 6-8 p.m.

Show hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Nov. 6, and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 7, with a raffle 2-3 p.m. for prizes donated by local businesses. Pickup is 3-4 p.m. Nov. 7.

The show enables CVAA to award scholarships to Douglas High School continuing art students.

Sweeney wins honorable mention

Gardnerville artist Teri Sweeney won an honorable mention for her watercolor, "Tenaya Creek," at the 56th Juried Exhibition at the Haggin Museum, sponsored by the Stockton Art League, Stockton, Calif.

About 105 pieces from 670 submitted artworks were selected for cash awards. Artwork will be on display and for sale through Oct. 31. Information, hagginmuseum.org

Sweeney has shown in galleries in Mammoth Lakes, Tucson, Lake Tahoe, Minden, and Hawaii. Sweeney currently teaches weekly watercolor classes from her studio and watercolor workshops periodically throughout the country.

Brekas recognized in art exhibition

Gardnerville resident Pam Brekas received two special recognition merit awards for artwork in the 12th annual Abstraction Juried Online International Art Exhibition hosted by Upstream People Gallery.

Brekas submissions of the photographs, "Bodie Rust," a close-up of corrugated metal on a building in Bodie, and "Skagway #2" of old mining equipment at the Klondike Goldfield in Skagway.

There were 36 artists recognized from the field of 200 entries in the international exhibition, which may be viewed at www.upstreampeoplegallery.com

Halloween and harmonicas Oct. 24 

The Carson City Symphony, directed by David Bugli, opens its 27th season with the Halloween and Harmonicas concert, 4 p.m. Oct. 24, at the Carson City Community Center's Bob Boldrick Theater, 851 E. William St., in Carson City.

Guest soloist is classical harmonica virtuoso Jia-Yi He. The program includes Moussorgsky's "A Night on Bald Mountain," Haydn's "Surprise" Symphony, Grieg's "In the Hall of the Mountain King," Liszt's "Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2" with Jia-Yi He on harmonica, Vivaldi's Concerto for Two Violins in A-Minor with Jia-Yi He and Tom Stryker on harmonicas, and Smetana's "Dance of the Comedians" with Jia-Yi He.

Tickets are $15 general admission, $12 for seniors, students, and symphony association members, and free for children age 16 and younger, available at Play Your Own Music in the Carson Mall, at CCSymphony.com or at the door.
