JV/FROSH ROUNDUP: Freshman volleyball, JV football

The Douglas High freshman volleyball team continues to experience success in competition.

Last week every member of the team recorded stats for a two game win against Hug. Kellie Hergenraader and Jessa Gansberg each had three aces.

Kristina Barnum, Hailee Porras and Sam Brown had two with Kellie and Sam also earning a block.

Shelby Van Winkle and Mikaela Wender each contributed three assists and one ace.

Tia Lutz and Justine Dale both recorded an assist as well.

Kinsey Bell had one kill and eight digs while Anna Lukemberry had one block, one kill and two digs.

Sage Pintler also contributed with two kills and an ace, while Mikaela Slack had an ace and a dig.

The Tigers took the Rail City Tournament in Spanish Springs over the weekend, winning every match they played.

Coach David Trujillo said, "The girls competed very well this weekend. We have talked about acting like champions in order to be champions. Their act, in effort and attitude, led to a championship this weekend."

This week the Freshman Tigers play Spanish Springs away on Tuesday and Carson High at home on Thursday.

The Douglas High junior varsity football team improved its record to 5-1 with a 55-6 victory over the Hug Hawks.

The game featured a variety of scoring plays by the Douglas offense, a stingy Douglas defense, and some entertaining runs by players whose main job is to block.

The scoring was led by Dylan Wilson who had touchdowns runs of 30, 13, and eight yards, all before halftime.

First half touchdowns were also scored by Dusty Fisher on an 11-yard run, Cole Melhus on a 12-yard pass from Mike Nolting, Jake Booher on a 10-yard pass from Nolting and Nolting on a 9-yard run. Connor Greth was good on five of his seven extra-point attempts.

The second half was highlighted by the ball carrying abilities of the Tiger linemen. The likes of Sean Jones, B.J. Sherwood, Jared Vasquez, and Nick Lufrano had spent the first half opening holes for the Tiger runners, now they got their turn at lugging the pigskin. Though none of the group managed a touchdown, they all ran tough and garnered some of the biggest cheers of the night.

With Hug's only score coming on a 90 yard kick-off return, the defense actually pitched a shut-out.

They also scored some points of their own with a touchdown by Nolting on an interception return of 50 yards, and a safety by Sam Amador. Nolting's interception was one of two he made, a third interception was added by Tim Jacobsen, while nose tackle Dillon McKinnish recovered a fumble.

Defensive end Lufrano, playing both ways, had two sacks and Zack Scholtz, from the other end had one.

Head coach Lance Hartzell was pleased to see there was no let down after the Tigers' big win over Carson last week. " Next week we have a much tougher opponent on the road, so we'll see what we're made of."
