Appreciate volunteers

What does it mean to volunteer? The dictionary definition is a person who renders aid, performs a service, or assumes an obligation voluntarily.

This past year I have been a member of Leadership Douglas County and have seen the importance of having volunteers within our community. We have the pleasure of living and working in a beautiful community, and behind the scenes of our ever changing and growing community is a large pool of volunteers, people from all walks of life giving of their time usually without any recognition.

With budget cuts hitting everyone volunteers are the cement that holds are community together. Without volunteers we would not have many of the services people in our community rely on, such as our fire departments, food closets, thrift stores, museums, library, animal shelter, after school programs and many more.

So next time you see a volunteer out in the community lending a hand, take the time to thank them. The key to our success rests in people like this, embodying the spirit of greatness by saying "Yes I can."
