Group hears about caring for seniors and themselves

About 70 people attended the annual senior education seminar sponsored by Douglas County TRIAD and Carson Valley Medical Center on Wednesday.

The five-hour session at Carson Valley United Methodist Church focused on caring for the caregiver.

The seminar was primarily designed for nurses, CNA's, professional and family caregivers, social workers, administrators and seniors, but was open to all those interested in the subject matter, organizers said.

Heather Korbulik, a long-term care ombudsman who works with the Nevada Aging & Disability Services Division, spoke at the seminar along with Dee Dee Metcalf and Amy Meeks from Carson Valley Medical Center.

Korbulik has five years of senior advocacy and talked about regulations for nursing facilities, group homes and elder law

Douglas County TRIAD was formed in 1996 to enhance the quality of life for senior citizens.

Its board of directors is 14 members representing the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, East Fork Fire & Paramedics District, Douglas County Senior Services, the Nevada Division of Aging Services, senior volunteers and Douglas County Ministerial.

Besides the seminar, its programs include the Guardian System Program, File of Life, Senior Law Enforcement Academy, senior identification cards and the Senior for a Day program, all free to Douglas County residents.
