Dustin Miller, a local freestyle motocross rider, recently presented a check in the amount of $1,124.90 to Gardnerville Elementary Principal Shannon Brown to benefit students at the school.

During Carson Valley Days in June, Miller and five other riders performed two free FMX demonstrations in Lampe Park and accepted donations only. This was done under the premise that all proceeds would go back to benefit Valley youth.

A total of $2,324.90 was raised including donations at the time of the event, a donation from Les Schwab Tire in Carson City, and some private sponsors.

The event, titled "Jumps for Joy," was held by the riders at no cost to spectators in the hope that spectators would donate to local youth. Miller said he is hoping to make it an annual event.

Gardnerville Elementary students thanked all the riders: Dustin Miller, Mike Mason, Adam Jones, Derek Burlew, Kenny Bell, Tim O'Brien and also Pete Knite for helping to make it happen.

Brown is currently working with staff to determine the best use of the money to support all students. Matt Buyten, who was unable to ride that day, donated his $1,200 he received in a poker tournament to the event.
