Foothills residents Jack (John) and Joyce Richardson recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. They were married Oct. 15, 1960, at the Hollywood First Presbyterian Church in Los Angeles.

They observed their 50th anniversary year with events including a 7,800-mile driving trip in June and July through the Pacific Northwest, British Columbia and Alaska.

Jack Richardson enlisted in the Navy in 1952, was selected to attend the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., and graduated with distinction in 1957. He served in the Navy for 32 years, retiring as a captain.

While on active duty, Richardson attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and received a naval engineering degree and a Master of Science in electrical engineering.

His duty assignments included seven years in Washington, D.C., when he served under Adm. Hyman G. Rickover. Retired Capt. Richardson considers his years with the "Father of the Nuclear Navy" as the highlight of his career.

Joyce Richardson graduated from the University of Southern California with a degree in journalism. She worked as a technical writer and owned a medical transcription service business in California for 20 years before retiring to Carson Valley.

The Richardsons have lived in Carson Valley for 10 years and are involved in various organizations. Joyce Richardson is on the board of the Carson Valley Trails Association and chairs the Trails Beautification committee. She is a support member of Douglas County Sheriff's Search & Rescue and volunteers for the Douglas County Historical Society.

Jack Richardson serves on the engineering committee for the Carson Valley Arts Council, lending his technical expertise for their building modifications. He participates in CVTA trail-building.

The Richardsons are the parents of John D. Richardson III of Jasper, Ind., Kathryn M. McCauley of Chula Vista, Calif., and foster son Trevor Bourget of Poway, Calif. The couple have six grandchildren.
