Historical society closes summer with flea market

We have a winner in our August photo contest. Nancy Clarke is a new contest entrant; this winning shot of cascading roses and our beautiful clouds is her first entry into our contests. Congratulations, Nancy. What a beautiful August representative.

This weekend is Labor Day, generally considered to be the end of summer. We know there will be more hot days before the leaves turn and the winds start to blow them away. But this is the last of the summer holidays.

Military men and women, this is the last weekend to use the Blue Star Museum Program whereby you can receive free museum admission. Please come out and visit our museums. We'd love to see you.

If you haven't been to the Genoa Courthouse Museum this summer, plan a trip over there before they close for the season. Every year the exhibit committee does something new and wonderful at each of our museums, so don't miss seeing them at least once each summer.

Once the weekend is over, we start in with all kinds of fun activities. First on Thursday, Sept. 9, Dennis Cassinelli would be our guest lecturer. Dennis will be telling us how the Douglas County region, as well as some of the characters from this area, participated in the Comstock boom. Dennis is the author of three books about the Great Basin region.

Raised in Sparks, Nevada, Dennis developed an interest in Indian artifacts as a young boy working on his family's ranch. In the early 1990s, he painstakingly identified hundreds of projectile points to create the Cassinelli-Perino Artifact Collection, now located at the Gardnerville museum. The lecture begins at 7 p.m. The cost for admission is $3, free to members of the Douglas County Historical Society.

Saturday, Sept. 11, is our final flea market for this summer. Applications for space to sell your treasurers can be reserved by calling 782-2555 or going online to www.historicnevada.org. Go to Calendar/Events. Click on September 11/Flea Market.  Once there, click on Flea Market Applications.

Then join the final Thirsty Third Thursday crowd on Sept. 16 as they wind up the year on Main Street, downtown. The walk goes from 4:30 to 8 p.m. and registration is at the Gardnerville museum.

September in Douglas County is very special. Come join in the fun.
