The rib cook-off last weekend in Sparks was a lot of fun - great smells, good food and lots of vendors with a variety of items to choose from. We meet our friends Ginger and Tom for the event and spend the day catching up what's going on in each of our lives.
We shared a picnic table with visitors from Truckee and her parents from Arizona. We learned that the parents lived just outside of Phoenix, not far from Ginger's son and brother. They're also looking to do some remodeling on their second home in the Tahoe area and Ginger's other son is a contractor with his own business so she gave his number to them.
We had such fun talking about all the things we had in common, the food we liked the best, and how it seemed more crowded this year. Later we realized we hadn't even shared names.
Jack Ingram was the entertainment on Friday night and he put on a great show, mixing a bit of rock and roll with his own style of Texas country.
Being a barbecue lover, he enjoyed ribs on stage that fans had brought to him, tossing the cleaned bone aside just like one would do at a picnic. Now that's the way to eat ribs in the South. Of course, that means someone has to come in and do the cleanup. I don't remember worrying about the cleanup when I was younger.
A gentle reminder to everyone to support Steven Hennefer reach his goal of 75 baskets filled with pet supplies to give to people who adopt animals from the Douglas County Animal Shelter. Steven's love of animals is the reason he chose this worthwhile cause for his Eagle Scout project.
In this economy, the shelter has seen a decrease in the numbers of animals that go home after being picked up loose in the county. This means that more animals are at the shelter needing a new home. They provide us with unconditional love, let's give some of that back to them.
Suggested items to put in the adoption baskets include food bowls, toys, leash, collar, grooming supplies (shampoo, brush, nail clippers, etc.), treats, canned food for cats and dogs.
If you're not sure what to get, you could make a cash donation so Steven can purchase items to complete the baskets.
Curves in the Stratton Center at 1540 Highway 395 has agreed to accept donations. They are open Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. (close at 6:30 p.m. Fridays) and 8 a.m. to noon Saturday.
If you are unable to get to Curves, Steven said to call him at 265-9346 and he will schedule a time to pick up your donations.
