Soccer: Tiger girls break state record, boys fall to Wooster

The Douglas High girls' soccer team broke the school and state records for consecutive shutouts Saturday, extending their streak to seven with a 12-0 win over Wooster in Minden.

That sets up a matchup between archrivals Tuesday night as the Lady Tigers will travel to Carson for a 7 p.m. kickoff.

Douglas improved to 7-0 overall and 3-0 in league play. The Tigers haven't allowed a goal since the season-opener against McQueen.

April Hoogendijk started things off Saturday, scoring an unassisted goal in the sixth minute. She added two assists later in the game.

Alex Laing added her first goal of the season, assisted by Tia Lyons, in the 13th minute. Brianna Randall then assisted on a Lexie Weaver goal and later scored two goals of her own. Weaver also finished with two goals in the game.

Randall also combined with freshman Courtney McKimmey for the shutout in net.

Lyons finished the day with four assists, which tied for second in the state record books (the record for assists in a game is five), and a goal. Katie Dry also chipped in an assist while Jessica Vega, Ali Chambon, Holly Downer and Shannon Prinz all had goals as well.

BOYS

Douglas fell back by two goals, later took the lead and eventually saw that slip away in a wild 4-3 loss to Wooster in Minden Saturday afternoon.

The Colts took a 2-0 lead into halftime but Douglas tied things up on a pair of penalty kicks five minutes apart from Daniel Calderon.

Douglas took the lead in the 65th minute when Troy Cohee sent a nice pass to Justin Draper who ran it in toward the goal and volleyed it over the Wooster keeper's head.

A pair of defensive lapses late in the game, however, led to Wooster's final two goals, leaving Douglas still in search of its first win of the season.

"There are some things we have to work on, but I couldn't be happier with how much resiliency the kids showed in coming back from 2-0," Douglas coach Milko Vasquez said. "Eric Kleiner, Gavin Fitzhugh and Mason Jackson did a great job on the defensive end and Luis Sillas and Troy Cohee were great in the middle."

Vasquez also credited Jaden Mustacchio for his play up top.
