A memorial service is pending for retired U.S. Marine Corps Gunnery Sgt. Jimmy Lloyd Jackson, 81, who died Aug. 26, 2010, in Texas.

Born Sept. 30, 1928, he joined the Marine Corps in 1948, and served in Korea, and two tours of duty in Vietnam. He was the co-author of the Marine Corps' manual for musical instrument repair, which is still in use today. He was known by his Marines as the leader of the band when he retired.

A 30-year resident of Topaz Ranch Estates, he was a founding member of the Topaz Ranch Estates Veterans of Foreign Wars chapter. He was a charter member of Sertoma International. He also served as a volunteer firefighter.

He is survived by sons Jimmy D. Jackson of Gardnerville and Randall J. Jackson of Byhalia, Miss.
