The Douglas High cross country team enjoyed a solid home meet at Kingsbury Middle School last week as both the boys and girls teams picked up wins over Wooster.
"It's a really tough course with the elevation change, quite a few good-sized hills, creek crossing, a fence, etc.," Douglas coach Jay Frey said.
Andrew Cobourn won the meet by more than a minute, running the 5K course in 18:56, dropping his time by 2:05 on the same course two years ago.
The team's two through four spots went to freshmen as Brandon Pankey took fifth overall (21:02), Cole Peck took seventh overall (21:15) and Jeff Williams turned in a 22:14.
"Brandon has been running very consistently for a freshman," Frey said. "He's getting stronger every race. Cole had a little redemption after a tough race last week and Jeff stepped up and impressed as well. He's getting a better idea of how to run these races."
Tanner DeGiovanni had a 22:34 and Daniel Lundergreen (22:35) and Parker Dixon (22:39) both broke out and turned in their best races of the season so far, rounding out the varsity scoring for the boys.
Sadie Gastelum cut 1:32 off her time from two years ago to win the girls' race in 23:15.
"She had a pretty spectacular race and seemed to have a lot of fun doing it," Frey said.
Bre Chabot finished in second place in 24:19, cutting 3:23 off her time from two years ago.
"This is a huge jump to make in that time," Frey said.
Kylie Flannagan was seventh overall in 26:29 (an impressive 5:35 faster than two years ago).
Audrey Moore (27:47), Stacey Waggoner (27:57), Eunice Perez (28:25), and Taryn Morningstar (28:50) rounded out the girls varsity scoring for the meet.
"Stacey showed an amazing amount of tenacity in this race, reaching some new levels in her racing and abilities," Frey said. "Taryn had to fight through a lot of pain, but ran her best race of the year. She's one of the hardest fighters on this team.
"This entire team impresses both me and (coach) Marc (Walling) on a daily basis. It's an incredibly hard-working, smart, and eager group that is going to make the rest of the season and years to come unforgettable. Our key now is to keep everyone healthy so we can continue our growth and success througout the season."
