JV/Frosh roundup: JV football loses, freshman volleyball on win streak

The Douglas Tiger junior varsity football team stopped the McQueen running back for no gain on the first play from scrimmage in last Friday's game.

On the next play, the McQueen back took the ball 60 yards for a touchdown.

Things didn't get any better later on as Douglas suffered its worst loss in years, 50-0.

The first half saw the Douglas offense turn the ball over three times, and the defense give up runs of 70, 60, 50 and 35 yards. What looked to be the Tigers' one score, an Isaac Keyway interception return, was called back because of 12 men on the field.

The final McQueen score of the half, with under a minute left, gave them a 36-0 lead over the Tigers.

The second half didn't start any better as a bad snap on a Douglas punt gave McQueen the ball on the Tiger 20-yard line, and the score was soon 43-0. Douglas seemed to settle down after that, however and held McQueen scoreless until the last minute of the game. On offense they moved the ball between the twenties, but still could not manage a score. The biggest boost to the offense was the scrambling of quarterback Conner Greth. The bright light of the defense was linebacker Austin Martin, who made numerous tackles and an interception.

"We've been making mistakes all season and today it caught up with us. We need to get better-and that includes the coaching staff-and in a hurry." said head coach Lance Hartzell, "We play a very good team in just a few days."

The Tigers play Carson Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at Douglas.

FRESHMAN VOLLEYBALL

The Douglas High girls' freshman volleyball team is off to a terrific start this year. After losing their first home match to Reed High School, the frosh girls have been on a winning streak.

Last week the girls defeated both McQueen at home and Manogue on the road in only two sets each.

Michaela Wendler was a standout for the freshmen on Tuesday against McQueen with a run of 13 serves. However, all players have contributed to the success of the season thus far.

"We have a great group of girls this year," coach David Trujiillo said. "They work hard, have positive attitudes and are willing to learn. From a coaching perspective, these are qualities that produce success."

This week the Freshman Team takes on Galena and Hug at home at 3:45 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday respectively.
