The Douglas county fair to be held Oct, 17-18, aside from the exhibits, offers entertainment of great variety. There will be a parade through Gardnerville and Minden led by an orchestra. It will be composed of horses, prize livestock, the entire play and skit in costume, and automobiles decorated for the occasion. Next is the gymkhana, a tournament of knights, stake races, cavalry stunts and many features of horsemanship.

Sept. 29, 1960
Betty Terry, 62, owner of the Lazy Y Bar and Motel at Holbrook Junction, was killed instantly early Friday when her speeding 1959 sedan failed to negotiate a turn entering Gardnerville and plowed into a parked Mack truck and trailer. Mrs. Terry had reportedly been chasing a 1956 yellow Ford pickup whose driver had sped away from her establishment without paying the gas bill.

Candy lovers from everywhere can indulge in 1,000 pounds of homemade Genoa fudge, Genoa divinity, Genoa almond roca and Genoa peanut brittle at the Candy Dance and Arts and Crafts Fair at Mormon Station State Park. Genoa women have baked some 175 dozen cookies and some 600 kid-tested suckers. The Genoa Town Board will sell a Candy Dance book listing 126 recipes for Candy Dance candy, and contains a brief history and pictures of Genoa's annual event.

A 4.7 earthquake rumbled through Carson Valley early Tuesday, waking a few residents and serving as a not-so-gentle reminder that seismically speaking, the Eastern Sierra is a busy place. "It wasn't a big one," said John Louie, associate professor of seismology at the University of Nevada, Reno. "This earthquake is just another in the sequence of continuing activity since the 6.0 Double Springs Flat earthquake in September 1994."
