Volleyball: Tigers sweep Galena

After rolling through the first two games against Galena Tuesday night, the Douglas volleyball team found itself down 20-15 in the third.

The Tigers rallied with an impressive 10-1 run, including a 7-0 stretch to retake the lead, to put away the game and the match 25-18, 25-13, 25-21 in Minden.

"It was a good match for us, just as far as have good maturity and the way they were seeing the floor," Douglas coach Suzi Townsell said. "They were nice and relaxed and confident. That's something we've been working on a lot."

Townsell said while it was one of the better matches her team has played this season, there were still areas she saw that need some work.

"We're going to be working hard on our defense this week," she said. "There were little things we want to work on but, overall, it looked pretty good."

Mia Townsell served up 14 points in the match, including a pair of aces, to go with 12 digs, an assist and a kill.

Shannon Dugan had 13 kills, Brenna White had eight and Emily Garcia had six.

Garcia had three blocks, Jackie Harper had 25 assists and the team came up with 11 aces.

Rounding out the team's kills were Harper with two and Erin Allison, Keely Latham and Carly McCullough each with one.

Allison, Dugan and White each had a block while White had six digs, Amanda Wartgow had three digs, Allison, Nikki Chavez, Dugan, Harper and Savannah Wood each had two and Garcia and McCullough each had one.

Allison, Chavez, Latham, Wartgow, White and Wood each had an ace and Dugan, Garcia, McCullough and Wood each chipped in an assist.

Allison and Harper each had six service points, Latham had five, Wartgow and White each had four, Chavez had three, Wood had two and Dugan and McCullough each had one.

Douglas improved to 17-1 overall and 7-0 in league play with the win while the Grizzlies dropped to 5-2 in league play.

The Tigers host Hug Thursday night before traveling to a large-school varsity tournament in Sacramento this weekend that will feature bigger schools like Davis and Chico.

"Our whole goal with this season is to continuously get better," Townsell said. "There are some really big schools with some really great club players at this tournament. It'll be a good parameter to see what we really need to work on, where we can progress and also see what already is working for us."
