History lecture topic changed to Nevada ghost towns

There's a change in the Douglas County Historical Society's lecture series for October. Our previously scheduled speaker canceled and our dear friend, Stan Paher, has agreed to join us and give us another of his talks about the history of Nevada on Oct. 14. 

Nevada ghost town and mining camp author Stanley Paher will be giving an all new ghost town presentation, first exploring the Bodie-Aurora area, showing the mining camps as they were and the kinds of relics that have been found there. Next he will take us to the eastern Nevada mining camps of Hamilton and Ward. Then he will show the Candelaria area south of Hawthorne before visiting western Nevada, especially places along the Carson River. He will close by showing the joys of finding relics and camping and hiking in the ghost towns.

Question and answers always follow Stan's presentations and he will offer several of his books for sale as well. If you have never heard Stan talk, don't miss this lecture. Stan is the premier Nevada historian who never fails to enlighten and entertain us with his knowledge. The lecture starts at 7 p.m. and is free to DCHS members, $3 for non-members. 

Haunted Weekend is coming. Set aside Oct. 21 through 24 for our Haunted Weekend Ghost Walks. We promise to fill four days with stories about early settlers' haunted sites, hangings, murders and all those other things that promise to curl your hair.

Thursday, Oct. 21, will feature the Haunted Minden Ghost Walk. This is a new walk showcasing Minden's famous past residents. Friday, Oct. 22, will feature Haunted Gardnerville Ghost Walk, drumming up some of Gardnerville's more famous residents.  Saturday, Oct. 23, will highlight the 14th annual DCHS Cemetery Tour at the historic Mottsville Cemetery, the oldest in Nevada. 

Concluding Sunday Oct. 24, we will present the Haunted Genoa Ghost Walk. For more information and tickets to these four Ghost Walks, call the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville at 782-2555.

Did you know that the Douglas County Historical Society Trustee meetings are held on the third Thursday or each month at 7 p.m. at the Gardnerville museum? The annual membership meeting is the third Thursday in May. Everyone is welcome to attend. Come see how we operate. Come get involved.
