"A big part of our mission at WE of the Carson Valley is to give back to the community," said Debbie McFadden, community outreach director of the Carson Valley Chapter of Women Entrepreneurs of the World. "We selected the Family Support Council as they have been a reliable resource for families in Douglas County for over 28 years."

The Family Support Council of Douglas County is a nonprofit agency. All victim services are free of charge. What started as a single domestic violence hotline has grown to include a secure domestic violence shelter and a source of information and support for domestic violence, teen dating violence, stalking, sexual assault, child abuse, parenting education programs, legal information, individual and group counseling.

According to Kristie Traver, executive director at the Family Support Council, they have helped more women and children requesting shelter this year than ever before in the agency's history.

"This year the number of families at the shelter increased 60 percent, from 48 in 2008-09 to 76 in 2009-10," said Traver. "The number of occupied bed nights at the shelter also increased 80 percent from 1,011 to 1,824. With these increases, we can use all the assistance we can get, and are very grateful to WE of the Carson Valley for putting on this event for our benefit."

The mission of WE is to help build personal and professional success for its members through focused networking opportunities, rallies and conferences, equitable relationship development, think-tank mastermind groups, a progressive mentor program, and an assistance program for start-up businesses from concept to funding.
