MINDEN - Kameron Van Winkle and Cody Lommori each hit home runs Thursday afternoon as the Douglas baseball team cruised to a 12-2 win over McQueen.
Van Winkle went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored and Lommori went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored to lead Douglas as the Tigers pounded out 12 hits.
Douglas got things going in the second inning, batting through the order plus one and scoring seven runs on eight hits and an error.
Lommori led the inning off with a single, Scott Rudnick was hit by a pitch and Walker Gemmill bunted safely to load the bases. A Cody Begovich single to center scored Lommori to put Douglas on the board and the flood gates opened from there.
Brett Parks hit a sacrifice fly to center to bring Rudnick in, Shane Fencl doubled to bring Gemmill in a and Tanner Egan singled to bring Begovich and Fencl around.
Egan advanced to second on the throw in and Van Winkle slapped the fifth pitch he saw towering high over the left-field fence.
"These two games (Douglas beat Manogue 8-2 on Wednesday) have been huge at the plate," Douglas coach Bruce Jacobsen said. "The guys in the heart of the order did what they are supposed to do and the guys around them came up big, too.
"When we can do that, we'll be pretty good. These seniors we have this year, there are eight of them and pretty much all eight contribute. We'll go as far as they can take us."
McQueen brought two runs across in the top of the third but that would be it for the Lancers on the afternoon.
Lommori hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth to push the lead to 8-2 and Douglas plated four runs in the bottom of the fifth to end the game due to the 10-run mercy rule.
Freshman Kyle Johnson worked through three innings to start for the Tigers but gave way to Nolan Weintz, who picked up the win in relief after striking out two.
"Kyle did a good job," Jacobsen said. "He's just a freshman, but he throws three pitches for strikes. He got a little tired there and got away from what he does best, but he's young still and he's going to be a good one for us."
Douglas improved to 6-4 overall and 2-2 in Northern 4A play.
