PREPS: CARSON SPLITS WITH MANOGUE

RENO - Carson High's softball team split its doubleheader at Bishop Manogue Saturday afternoon.

Carson took the opener 3-2, as Christina Gallegos scattered six hits, and Manogue won the nightcap 12-0 in a mercy rule game.

Carson returns to action Tuesday at home (3:30 p.m.) against Reno.

The Miners reached Gallegos for a run in the first, but Carson's Emily Collins tied it with a solo homer in the third.

Carson went ahead 3-1 in the sixth on Lauren Knorzer's two-run double.

Manogue had a chance to tie or win the game, but was thwarted by Morgan Kleine, Collins and K.C. Withrow.

The Miners had squeezed home a run to make it 3-2 with two outs. The next batter hit a single to left, and Kleine made a relay throw to Collins, whose throw was in time to throw out the runner at home and end the game.

Gallegos allowed six hits and struck out six while walking three.

In the second game, Manogue scored seven runs in the fourth to comfortably put the game away. Christa McGahuey started and took the loss, and was followed in the circle by Lou Ashbaugh and Gallegos.

Withrow, Jen Purcell and Lisa Yamamoto managed Carson's only hits in the second game.

DAYTON WINS TWO

FALLON - The Dust Devils improved to 11-3 with wins over Sparks and Truckee in 3A crossover games Saturday.

Dayton blanked Sparks 13-0 in the opener behind the no-hit effort by Makayla Shadle, who fanned 10 and walked two.

"Makayla threw a good game," Dayton coach Daven Passalacqua said. "We're real proud of her. I'm looking forward to the rest of the season."

Natasha Wells singled, doubled and drove in four runs, while Kenzie Cole doubled, tripled and drove in three runs. Gemma Ramirez went 2-for-3 and drove in a run. Shadle and Kaylee Alexander had a hit apiece.

In the second game, Cole fanned 14 and allowed four hits in a 2-0 win over Truckee. Ramirez and Cheyenna Burrows led Dayton with two hits apiece.

CARSON JV SWEPT

RENO - Carson's JV softball team lost 2-1 and 7-2 to Bishop Manogue on Saturday.

Carson lost the first game behind a strong pitching performance of Becka Breuer.

In the fifth inning, Carson had singles by Kaitlyn Jimmy, Kandis Tuttle, Sara Brewer and Breuer but only managed to push one run across. Manogue scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Sydney Knorzer was 2-3 with two doubles and Morgan Barton was 2-3 with two singles in the second game. Maddy Von Duering and Ashley Andreas were both 1-3. Carson plays at Reno on Tuesday.

BASEBALL

DAYTON'S STREAK ENDS

FALLON - Dayton High's baseball win streak ended at 13, as the Sparks Railroaders pinned a 9-2 defeat on the Dust Devils in a 3A crossover game at Fallon.

Dayton bounced back to nip Truckee 2-1 in their second game to improve to 14-1 overall.

"They were disappointed with it (the loss), but they took it in stride and played well against Truckee," Dayton coach Jay Merrell said.

Houston Berntson was tagged with the loss against Sparks. He gave up six runs and five hits in 3.2 innings.

Berntson drove in a run for the Dust Devils. Logan Jones, Forrest Burrows and Logan Garling all had one hit.

Conner Oliver fanned 13 and gave up two hits in the win over Truckee.

Berntson singled home the first run and Kyle Farnworth's infield out drove in the second run to make it 2-0 in the first. Truckee scored in the sixth.

Dayton plays ROP Tuesday afternoon.

LOCALS SHINE AT INVITE

SPARKS - Carson High's Gabe Pongasi and Josilyn Daggs, and Dayton's Kathy Arias performed well at this weekend's Reed Rotary Invitational.

Arias won the shot put and discus, throwing 37-9 and 131-9, respectively. The latter effort was a school record.

Pongasi was fourth in the triple jump with a PR of 42-2, while Daggs, a freshman, placed in the top eight in three events. She was fourth in the 100 (13.04), sixth in the 100 hurdles (17.56) and eighth in the 300 hurdles (51.31).

Blake McCoy was seventh in the discus at 125-4. Elena Thurman was second in the 40-meter dash, while Alex Drozdoff was fifth in the 3200 (12:37). Maddi Saarem was seventh in the pole vault with a mark of 8-feet.

Kage Walker of Dayton was second in the high jump at 6 feet.

Taylor Bradshaw won the frosh-soph 400 (51.43, PR), was second in the 200 (24.30), was eighth in the 100 and ran a leg on the third-place 1,600 relay. Levi Carter was fourth in the discus with a mark of 116-1.

"We have a young team and it showed today," Carson coach Robert Maw said. "Taylor had a good day and Josilyn held up the girls side. Gabe did a good job in the triple jump."

DAYTON TEAMS 2ND

YERINGTON - Dayton's boys and girls track teams finished second to Fernley at the Yerington Invitational Saturday afternoon.

Cody Yeater (triple jump, 39-11 PR), Jordan Brown (long jump, 18-11) and Tylor Bard (6-1 high jump) won their respective events. Brown was second in the high jump at 5-10 and Yeater was third in the high jump at 5-8. Ethan Galloway was fourth in the 800 (2:21) and second in the pole vault (10-6, PR). John Serrano was second in both the shot (39-5) and the discus (126-5, PR). Josh Boga was second in the 110 high hurdles (19.23) an fifth in the 300 hurdles (50.2).

Lettie Lynch was Dayton's only winner in the girls' individual events. She won the 100 in 13.9. The 400 relay also won. D.J. Ply took second in the high jump (4-8, PR) and third in the pole vault (7-6). Alejandra Leon was third in the shot (28-0) and second in the discus (92-10, PR). Alyse Fletcher was second in the long jump (14-8, 2nd), while Rosa Ramsey was fourth in the 100 (14.22), fifth in the 200 (30.10) and third in the long jump (14-4). Brenda Cid was third in the 800 (2:50) and Muranda Fowler was third in the 400 (70.00).

GRUNERT SHINES FOR CHS

Carson's Tim Grunert had five top-5 finishes at Saturday's Aqua 5 Meet at the Carson Aquatic Center.

Grunert won the 100-yard breast (1:03.24), took fourth in the 50 free (23.66) and was fifth in the 100 free (53.14), 100 back (60.48) and 100 butterfly (58.78). Gary Showalter's best finish was a fourth in the 100 breast (1:08.33).

Sophie Holmes had two fifth-place finishes, a seventh-place finish and a 10th-place finish. She was fifth in the 100 breast (1:17.85) and 50 free (27.5). She was seventh in the 100 free (59.55) and 10th in the 100 back (1:12.65).

Elizabeth Everett was fifth in the 100 free (58.71), seventh in the 100 back (1:11.19) and ninth in the 50 free (27.75). Abi Pittman was seventh in the 100 breast (1:17.98), ninth in the 100 free (1:01.13) and ninth in the 100 fly (1:12.32). Erin Chang was eighth in the 100 free (1:01.13), ninth in the 100 breast (1:21.07) and 10th in the 100 fly (1:12.51).
