RENO (AP) - A Nevada man who rescued a 54-year-old woman from an apartment fire in Reno is one of 20 people in the U.S. and Canada getting Carnegie medals for heroism.
Carlos Valles of Sparks, Nev., was named for the honor Thursday for bravery in the April 2010 fire.
A 38-year-old delivery driver who saved a family of four from drowning in the Colorado River in Utah is also being honored by the Pittsburgh-based Carnegie Hero Fund Commission.
Kenneth Goss of Grand Junction, Colo., swam to rescue a 1-year-old, a 3-year-old and their parents after their raft overturned in near Moab, Utah, in April 2010.
Medalists or their heirs receive financial grants.
Steel baron Andrew Carnegie started the fund in 1904 after hearing rescue stories from a mine disaster that killed 181.
