WNC: Baseball, softball squads win three apiece

Western Nevada College's baseball squad won three games Friday to move back into first place in the Scenic West Athletic Conference by a half-game over Salt Lake City Community College.

WNC won 7-4, 12-2 and 13-1 against Colorado Northwestern in Rangely, Colo. The second game was stopped after seven because of the 10-run rule and th third was stopped after five innings because of the run rule. The tams played three games because rain was expected to hit the area today (Saturday).

The Wildcats are 20-3 in SWAC play, while Salt Lake is 20-2. Weather permitting, WNC will finish the series today at 10 a.m.

In the opener, Bobby Pappin had a pinch-hit three-run homer in the seventh for the Wildcats. Chris Garrison picked up the win, while Andrew Woeck recorded the save.

Tim Peterson worked five innings in the second game to get the win. Tyler Spencer worked the final two innings.

Beau Day had a two-run homer, while Sean Potkay collected three hits.

In the third game, Kody Gorden went all five innings and struck out six while allowing only three hits.

Pappin hit a two-run homer as did reserve catcher Sean Dwyer.

SOFTBALL WINS THREE ON ROAD

Because of possible incoming bad weather, the softball squads decided to play three games, and WNC swept the day. WNC won 16-7, 6-2 and 14-5 against host Colorado Northwestern.

WNC pounded out 15 hits in the opener, as Sarah Cuddahy went 2-for-4 with a solo homer. Mel Pfeiffer went 2-for-5, Megan Hein 2-for-4, Jordan Thomas went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, Ashley Gleason went 2-for-4, Tera Tibbitts went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and winning pitcher Ashley Hall hit a two-run homer.

Cassie Vondrak scattered four hits to pick up the win in the second game. Thomas went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, while Cuddahy went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Hall and Makaela Henshaw also drove in runs.

Jamie Klopatek scattered eight hits to get the win in the circle in the third game. Thomas went 3-for-3 with a two-run homer and three RBIs. Tibbitts also finishd up with three hits. Gleason went 2-for-3 with four RBI, while Hall went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Pfeiffer finished 2-for-5. Cuddahy and Tori Hynick also drove in a run each.
