Curtiss Elliott, a Western Nevada College bachelor of technology student, has been named a 2011 Regents' Scholar. The Nevada System of Higher Education Board of Regents annually recognizes top students around the state for their academic achievements, leadership abilities and service contributions.
Director of Counseling Services Deborah Case nominated Elliott for the award. As the adviser for the college's construction technology program, she has worked with Elliott for two years.
"He is an outstanding choice," Case said. "Curtiss brings enthusiasm, intelligence, determination, and personal commitment to pursuing his educational goals as well as to helping other students in his program succeed."
Elliott maintains a 3.68 grade point average, is a Carson City Rotary Club scholar, an active member of the Nevada Associated Students of Construction, a WNC peer mentor, and a volunteer for a number of community organizations. He has completed his Associate of Applied Science degree in Construction Management and plans to complete his Bachelor of Technology degree in the fall. His goal is to attain a master's degree so that he can teach at the college level and share his expertise with others.
College adviser earns Regents' honor
The Board of Regents for the Nevada System of Higher Education has honored WNC Director of Counseling Services Deborah Case as the college's 2011 Academic Advisor of the Year. She was nominated by both colleagues, students and college leaders.
Case is described as an "inspirational adviser who always has an open door," by one student, and Carol Lange, Interim Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs, says, "I have come to admire Deb for her ability to first and foremost focus on the best possible outcome for our students."
In addition to her primary role at WNC, Case is the adviser for the construction technology program and Campus Connect, a student club which works to unite adult students in an effort to enhance their college experience. She created the college's peer mentor program and is an active member of the Student Success subcommittee, which focuses on supporting academically under-prepared students.
"It is a great honor to nominated," Case said. "I'd like to thank the Regents, and also Dr. (Carol) Lucey for her support."
