Senator Square: New cheer coach comes to CHS

There will be a cheer parent meeting at 6 p.m. April 27 in the Carson High School library.

Those interested need to attend to receive an athletic packet and information regarding tryouts.

Carson High also welcomes new cheer coach Melissa Beck.

Melissa has an extensive background in coaching cheer/stunting and is a nationally ranked cheer competition judge.

Carson High School's Science Bowl team finished ninth in state at the United States Department of Energy's Science Bowl Competition on Feb. 25 in Las Vegas.

Team members included Brian Barnes, Brandon Buonacorsi, Jasmine Bean, Tim Dotson and Andrew Jones.

Carson High School finished third in the Nevada Academic League championships on April 4 at Lake Tahoe.

Team members included Jasmine Bean, Shruti Arun, Evan Richards, Andrew Jones, Brian Barnes, Brandon Buonacorsi, Tim Dotson, Joe Ward and Ben Osheroff.

This week's Senior Spotlight is on Caitlin Cosens, who has a grade-point average of 4.3.

Her courses include graphic design as well as Advanced Placement classes in government, English and psychology.

She is a member of Skills USA - where she's taken first place at the state level and second at the national level in photography.

She is also a member of the National Honor Society and is a teacher's aide at Fremont Elementary School.

She plans to attend UNR for two years, then transfer to a school in California to major in marine biology.

Congratulations to Edgar Casildo for placing sixth in dramatic interpretation at the state tournament.

Luis Becerra and Julianna Powell placed third at the district tournament and were named first alternate to nationals.

Charles Larkin qualified for the super congress and possibly earned a spot to nationals.

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month and the students of Health Occupations Students of America are trying to bring awareness to this devastating event.

HOSA is collecting used clothes of any type. Clothes can be dropped off at the attendance office, library or room 206.

All clothes will be donated to Advocates to End Domestic Violence in support of their local shelter.

HOSA members also will be recognizing Denim Day on April 28.

They will be hanging decorated jeans throughout CHS and asking students to wear denim as an act against sexual assault.

In observance of spring break, there will be no school April 18-25. We will return to school on April 26 with an A day.
