The Carson High softball team blew into a tie for first place in the Sierra League with a 6-3 win at McQueen on a windy Thursday.
Christina Gallegos tossed 6.2 innings allowing two earned runs while striking out nine. Gallegos left the game with two outs in the fifth after getting hit, after being cleared to re-enter she returned in the sixth to close out the Lancers.
"It was a really windy day," coach Scott Vickrey said. "Once (Gallegos) figured the wind out, she started getting it together."
Carson (8-3 in league) pushed a run across in the first after Kristin Withrow doubled. After a sacrifice bunt that moved Withrow to third, she scored on Christa McGahuey's ground out.
The Senators added another run in the third and took a 4-0 lead in the fourth, after the right fielder dropped the ball in the wind.
Carson would add two more in the sixth when Lauren Knorzer singled, moved to second on a sacrifice and third on Morgan Kleine's hit. Hannah Winder, who pinch ran for Knorzer, scored when Carson successfully executed the first and third play. After Kleine broke for second and McQueen threw the ball down to second, Winder beat the throw back home.
Withrow added an RBI single later in the inning to score Kleine.
Emily Collins, Withrow, Kleine and Knorzer all had two hits for the Senators. Withrow had two RBIs, McGahuey had another.
"We hit the ball well," Vickrey said of his team's 11 hits. "There pitchers were throwing a lot of first pitch strikes, but we were able to battle back."
Carson and Damonte are tied at 8-3 in league. Carson hosts Douglas for a doubleheader starting at 10 a.m. Saturday, while Damonte travels to Wooster. Carson-Damonte close the league season with a doubleheader at Carson on May 7.
