Round Hill manhunt ends in suspect's arrest

A manhunt for a Reno resident suspected of assaulting his brother ended peacefully in Zephyr Cove Friday afternoon.

Douglas County Sheriff's deputies arrested Wade Richard Kelly, 52, about 12:30 p.m. near Round Hill Pines Beach, said Captain John Milby.

Kelly was wanted in connection with an alleged assault in south Reno Thursday morning. Washoe County sheriff's deputies think he fired four or five shots about 8 a.m. during a dispute with his brother at the home of their mother.

It's unclear if Kelly's brother was hit by gunfire, but he was hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries to his face and hands, according to Washoe County Sheriff's Deputy Armando Avina.

Kelly was able to flee the south Reno residence before SWAT Team members arrived Thursday. Galena High School and Pleasant Valley Elementary were locked down as a precautionary measure.

About 7:15 a.m. Friday, a Douglas County sheriff's deputy recognized a maroon van driven by Kelly and performed a traffic stop on Elks Point Drive in Round Hill, Milby said. Kelly fled the traffic stop on foot and hid in the woods near Elk Point Country Club.

Deputies, SWAT Team members and K-9 units established a perimeter around the area and performed door to door searches, warning residents to keep homes and vehicles locked. Washoe County's Sheriff's Office helicopter, RAVEN, also assisted in the search.

Deputies believed Kelly could have been armed with a handgun or shotgun at the time he fled and considered him armed and dangerous. He did not have a gun at the time of his arrest.

Milby said crisis negotiators where in contact with Kelly via cell phone during the search, but where unable to find him until people in the area told deputies they saw Kelly hiding in the rocks near Round Hill Pines Beach.

SWAT Team members closed in on and arrested Kelly without incident, Milby said. He was booked into Washoe County Jail in Reno.

Kelly was arrested on suspicion of battery with a deadly weapon and being an ex-felon in possession of a firearm, Milby said.
