Community sports briefly: Youth tennis tournament at Centennial Park

There will be a tennis tournament for area youth on Aug. 20 -21 at Centennial Park in Carson City. The tournament is being hosted by the Carson Tennis Club. The two-day event features experienced and novice players from Reno, Tahoe, Carson and Douglas County and beyond. Junior and high school players can compete in the Challenger Division against like-minded area youth before the high school tennis season starts. Less experienced players are encouraged to come try out their skills in the Novice Division, specifically intended for beginners and first-time tournament players.

This tournament is open to youth players of all ages. Play will be grouped around 10s, 12s, 14s, 16s, and 18s age limits. Singles play only. Players are guaranteed two matches.

The entry deadline is Aug. 14. Enter online at www.blta.org. Other tournament dates, at other locations, are also available at this web site. Entry fee is $30 per player.

Adult tennis tournament in September

Carson Tennis Club presents its annual Fall Classic Tennis Tournament, open to all ages, Sept. 16-18 at Centennial Park in Carson City. Divisions include men's and women's singles and doubles, mixed doubles, and century (combined ages over 100). A super-century (combined ages over 120) is contemplated if there is enough interest. Beginner, intermediate, and advanced players (A, B, & C) will be grouped so that players of all skill levels can be competitive. Separate youth divisions will be scheduled, numbers permitting. This is a non-USTA-sanctioned tournament, intended to be a fun. Cost is $20 for singles players, and $30 per doubles team. Two matches are guaranteed, three matches will be scheduled in all draws with more than three teams.

Smitreski, Korzenieski win Carson Valley event

Ken Smitreski and John Korzenieski shot a net 62 to win the Carson Valley Men's Golf Club on July 31. Bob Pemberton and Mike Davis finished second with a 65. Mike Breckenridge and Russ Coons and Augustine Martinez and Paul Finan tied for third with a 66.

The team of Pat Lantis, Doug Mcgilvray, Dennis Puccinelli and Jim Pursel won the Silver Oak Senior Men's four-man best ball event on July 26 with a 111. Danny Jones, Tom Keating. Dennis Small and John R. Scoville shot a 116 for second place.

The team of Terry Thomas, Jim Zewan, Jerry Johnson and Walter Aster tied for third with Alex Talmant, Walter Ratchford, Bob Lewis and Dick Lund at 117. In fifth was the team of Tona Smith, William Mathews, Gary Curtis and Steve Alcalay.

Closest to the hole winners were Rogers Cartwright at 7-feet, 2-inches on No. 2. Verne Rosse at 1-foot on No. 6. Alex Talmant at 4-feet, 5 inches on the No. 17. Tom Abbett at 13-feet, 3-inches on No. 12. And Talmant on No. 14 at 18-feet, 2 inches.

John Masiello's 62 gave him the Flight A title in the Empire Ranch Senior Men's Golf Club tournament on July 27. Ken Stone and Mike Rogers finished right behind with 64s. Ray McPartlin won Flight B over James Bryant and Dan Powers.

Ross Sidebottom won Flight C with a 62. Dick Montoya, Fred Blackburn and James Sand all shot 64s.

In Flight D, Randy Wagner shot a 66 besting Don Becker (68) and Bob Del Carlo (69). In Flight E, Sharkey Chiang shot a 62 to win. Marshal McCurdy (64) and Larry Hamann (65) were second and third respectively.

Closest to the pin winners were Mike Vadnais on Blue No. 5; Tom Cashen on Blue No. 8; Vadnais on White No. 4; and Mill Milligan on White No. 8.

Craig Luce shot a 64 to capture the Flight 1 Sunday Men's Club event at Silver Oak Golf Course. John Owens and Lee Plemel tied for second with 66s. In Flight 2, Jay Smith shot a 65 to best Jeff Cloutier (69) and Kevin Silsby, Gary Nitzberg and Rich Torok who all shot 73.

Closest to the hole on No. 6 was Jay Smith at 3-feet, 8-inches.

Winning gross skins in Flight 1 were: Jim Silsby, Shawn Mott, Dennis Holt, Mark Kaiser, Jeff Cloutier, Kevin Silsby, Craig Luce, Fred Coons, William Kapczynksi and Lee Plemel. 9-Spoke builds on

After nine weeks of play, 9-Spoke has a seven-point lead of the Big Dogs in Comstock Division play of the of the Carson City chapter of the American Poolplayers Association. Jeff Cordova (38 points) leads the high tier by 18 points over Kenneth Gabbard (20 points). In the middle tier, Lawrence Gloistein leads Lisa McCuiston 30-26. In the low tier, Joshua Bice (26 points) leads Pam Fitzgerald-Wermes (18 points.)

In the Highway 50 Division, Union Bruisers leads O.G. Squeeze 48-42. Tight Rack is right behind in third with 41 points.

In the high tier, Casey Richards leads Bill Howard 13-8. In the middle tier, Michael Hoppes leads Richard Jenson 29-28. In the low tier, Ronald Ferrando (22) leads Scott Dorey (21).

In the Mosconi Division, Squeeze Play holds a three-point lead over The Spoke (35-32). In the high tier, Robert Haddix leads Jamie Day 27-23. Juan Pina and Chris Wood are right behind.

In the middle tier, Jason Kochamp leads Gregory Theis by two points (24-22). In the low tier, Gloria Rodriguez has a one-point lead over John Raker.

Walker scores

first ace at Dayton

Mike Walker, 64 of Dayton made his first ever hole-in-one on July 30 at Dayton Valley Golf Club. He used a 4-hybrid to knock it in from 175 yards on the 13th hole. Since he received a stroke on the hole he carded a net 0 in the Saturday men's game. Walker was playing with Gary Leiper and Larry Windsor.

Tigersharks swim well

in Incline Village race

The Carson Tigersharks sent 12 racers to the second annual Tahoe Sharkfest 1.2 mile race in Incline Village. Eli Everest finished second in the 15-16 year age group and third overall among women. Tallon Rauch was second in the 13-14 year-old male age group. Corinne Defilippi finished first in the 13-14- year-old age group. Ashley Meyer and Charlie Bradley tied for second 13-14 year-old female. Blanca Sosa was first in the 12 and younger age group. She also was the youngest swimmer in the race.
