State Treasurer Kate Marshall is warning Nevada residents about a scam involving fraudulent emails being sent to people nationwide advising them they have unclaimed property.
These emails state that the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators has an abandoned package belonging to that individual, and advises them to call NAUPA to claim the package. The phone number provided is an international number which the caller is charged high fees for.
Marshall, whose division is a member of NAUPA, is advising Nevadans that NAUPA is not responsible for notifying owners of forgotten or missing packages. Notifying owners of unclaimed packages is the sole responsibility of the individual state agencies.
Marshall states that anyone who receives and email from NAUPA or has a questions about the authenticity of an offer regarding unclaimed or abandoned property should contact the Nevada Unclaimed Property Division at (702) 486-4140 or unclaimedproperty@nevadatreasurer.gov.
