Roberts House yard sale set for Saturday

The Roberts House Yard Sale/Flea Market will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at 1207 N. Carson St.

Seventeen vendors will offer goods including antiques, collectibles and crafts. Tours of historic Foreman-Roberts house will be available. The event benefits the Carson City Historical Society. For more information, call Mary DeFelice at 882-0916.

Help needed with annual Backpack Attack

Soroptimist of Carson City and Platinum Plus Salon and Spa are again hosting the Backpack Attack program to provide backpacks, school supplies and hygiene items to children in need. Children need backpacks and items such as crayons, wide-ruled notebook paper, three- or five-subject wide-ruled notebooks, three-ring binders, pocket-only folders, pencil boxes or bags, red, blue and black medium ballpoint pens, No. 2 pencils, erasers, glue sticks, blunt-nosed scissors, yellow highlighters, rulers, pencil sharpeners, 3x5 ruled index cards and protractors.

Many of these children have been removed from their homes and need hygiene supplies such as bar soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste and small tissue packages. Any of these items will help and will be packed in the backpacks.

A free raffle ticket for a chance to win a spa package valued at $250 from the salon, plus a number of other raffle prizes, will be awarded for each backpack donated.

Building supplies needed for October haunted house

Jason and Christina Stinson, who operated a haunted house last year at their home at the corner of Broadleaf and Northgate in Carson City, say they're planning to make this year's event even bigger and better.

The couple has already begun working on the haunted house to help the homeless through gently used clothing and canned food donations from those who attend, but they need help with supplies to finish up the construction.

Anyone who would like to help can call 445-9477 to find out what supplies are needed.

Fifth annual community drive for school supplies

Bauter & Holmes is sponsoring the fifth annual community school supply drive. Donations can be dropped off at the Bauter & Holmes office, 525 W. Washington St., through Aug. 17. Hours are 8 a.m.-4 p.m., Monday through Thursday.

Supplies needed include pens, pencils, paper, facial tissue, hand sanitizer, etc. Monetary donations are also accepted and appreciated. Bauter & Holmes will match a percentage of the amount donated.

Carson man earns private-pilot glider rating

Sam Schuler of Carson City earned his private pilot glider rating on July 29. Schuler is an employee of SoaringNV in Minden. Schuler started flying gliders in March 2009 and was trained by Jeffrey Hazlegrove, a master flight instructor with SoaringNV.

"When he first started, he was not sure if soaring was for him. But soon, after seeing thousands of flights and much joy after those flights, Sam took the challenge. He started training, and of course, working around the gliders, hearing the talk, walking the walk, plus he's computer-smart," Hazlegrove said. "It was not long before he was good and ready to complete his glider pilot's license. Well done, Sam!"

Gliders, sometimes called sailplanes, have no engine and but stay aloft using columns of rising air in which pilots bank their craft in tight circles to climb. Flights of more than five hours covering hundreds of miles are common. High-performance sailplanes can cover 60 miles in one glide without lift from only 5,000 feet in altitude.

Schuler has been working for SoaringNV for two years and is a student at Western Nevada College.

Staples will host Teacher Appreciation Day at store locations across the country to make it easy to provide teachers the tools they need to be successful in the classroom.

The first 100 teachers visiting Staples stores on Teacher Appreciation Day, from 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 13 at the Staples store at 915 Jacks Valley Road in north Douglas County, will receive a reusable lunch bag filled with pens, eraser caps, note tabs, a one-subject notebook, glue sticks and sticky notes. Teachers also will receive a coupon sheet.

Each year, many teachers spend their own money on classroom materials, according to the National Education Association.

RWC hosts professor Erik Herzik

The Carson City Republican Women's Club will host a luncheon from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Aug. 16 at the Gold Dust West Casino, 2171 Highway 50 East.

The program will offer answers to who votes, what motivates voters and what brings them to the polls by guest speaker political science professor Erik Herzik from the University of Nevada, Reno.

Herzik's focus is American politics, state and local politics and policymaking and administration. He is the author of more than 50 research articles and monographs and has co-edited five books, including two texts on Nevada politics.

Information comes just in time for the 2nd Congressional District special election, set for Sept. 13.

Foreclosure information classes offered

Nevada Legal Services is offering free foreclosure information classes to Nevada homeowners. The classes will focus on the foreclosure process including mandatory mediation and the government-sponsored loss mitigation options.

The classes are being held from 3-5 p.m. Aug. 23 and Sept. 27 ay Dayton Valley Branch Library, 321 Old Dayton Valley Road in Dayton.

Napa Valley topic of library presentation

Carson City Library will present Explore Napa Valley at Your Library at 6 p.m. Aug. 18 in the library auditorium.

Gino Giudice, Ph.D, will present the program. He has visited this world-famous wine region on various occasions.

Democratic women to meet

The Carson City Democratic Women's Club will meet Aug. 13 at Grandma Hattie's Restaurant. Arrive by 11:30 a.m. to order a meal, or at noon for the program.

Could you survive living in poverty?

Capital City Circles Initiative and St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Community will host a poverty simulation at 9 a.m. Aug. 13 at the church, at 3000 N. Lompa Lane.

Participants in the poverty simulation will role-play the life of a low-income family or individual who is struggling with financial survival in a society where the obstacles to success often seem insurmountable. Participants will encounter the challenges of providing food and shelter with limited resources, interacting with social services and exploring the realities of poverty.

Essay contest announced

"What Freedom of Speech Means to Me" is the theme for the Fleet Reserve Association's annual Americanism essay contest. The contest is open to all students in grades 7-12.

A student may submit only one essay no longer than 350 words, legibly written or typed on one side of a sheet of paper. Entrants are to include their names, address, school grade and sponsoring FRA branch.

Entries should be received by the Sierra-Tahoe Branh 137, FRA, P.O. Box 1342, Minden, NV 89423, no later than Dec. 1.

Winners at each grade level receive recognition certificates of appreciation from FRA and U.S. savings bonds ranging from $50 to $500, with a grand prize of $10,000 at the national level.
