Library New & Notes: Writing contests, book sale and more at library

Never content to be "good enough," the library manages to make August interesting and informative for members of the community. Patrons interested in the current economic situation can find free legal information; students resuming formal education can discover a vast array of research and tutorial assistance; and writers and travel buffs can enter a writing contest or plan a long weekend getaway to the Napa Valley.

Friends of the Library roll out the Dollar Book Sale this week with bargains galore. Hardcover books are $1, while paperbacks and children's books are two for $1. A preview for members runs from 5:30-7 p.m. Thursday, and the sale is open to the public from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday and from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday. The library could not operate as effectively without the support and commitment of the Friends, and the Friends could not maintain the quality of both the Browsers Corner and the book sales without the huge book donations from the community. Canvas library bags also are available the Browsers Corner for $8, or $7 with a library card.

Urbanologist, traveler, explorer and writer Max Grinnell will sponsor a writing contest for interested participants. The focus of the contest will particularly appeal to history buffs and aspiring writers as it features some unique regulations. The open format (prose, poem, ditty) is limited to 350 words and must include historical figure Hank Monk, a stagecoach driver who traveled from Carson City to Placerville, and the words "National Humane Alliance Fountain." According to former State Archivist Guy Rocha, the polished granite fountain was donated to the city by the Humane Alliance in 1909 and dedicated to kinship and goodwill between animals and humans. The fountain is composed of a 6-foot-diameter bowl with three lion head spouts where "men, horses and dogs" could drink. There are small cups at the bottom for cats, dogs and other animals. Contest entries must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. Aug. 19 to maxgrinnell@gmail.com. Winners will be announced at Grinnell's presentation on Aug. 29.

Programs of special interest

The League of Women Voters will provide an informational workshop discussing the federal health care law at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 16, in the auditorium.

Explore Napa Valley @ Your Library features an easily accessible destination close to home. Dr. Gino Giudice will present the program at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 18, in the auditorium.

The Lego Club meets from 10 a.m. -noon Saturday, Aug. 20, in the auditorium. Every day, articles stress the need for engineers in present and future job markets. Working with and designing structures and projects with Legos is an entertaining and educational way to pique early interest in this field.

Love on a Leash, the popular therapy dog reading program, meets from 1-2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, in the Children's Room. Children receive a free book as part of the program.
