The man who occupies the midnight hour watching the Appeal office from behind the shrubby of the Capitol square, will have better facilities before long. The Capitol Commissioners think of fixing up a fetch with a canvass awning to keep off the dew and a short range glass. A man so seldom "on the square' that he only sneaks there in the dark should be offered every inducement.

100 years ago

When Mark Twain traveled to Europe many years ago, he stopped at Bellagio on the shores of Lake Como. "I did not like it (Lake Como) yesterday. I thought Lake Tahoe much finer." Twain often remarked how he would be pleased to have a beautiful home on Tahoe.

70 years ago

The death of Tony Pelaez in the north drift of the Humboldt shaft in the Nevada-Massachusetts tungsten mine at Mill City was due to heart attack, the coroner's jury found yesterday. Matt Murphy, state mine inspector, notified of the death yesterday conducted an investigation.
