Happy Senior Tours travels to Boomtown in September

The Carson City Senior Center's Happy Senior Tours group will travel to Boomtown on Sept. 13. The cost for the trip will be $17. The casino will give each guest a $10 free play and a food voucher. The bus loads at 7:45 p.m. in the east parking lot of the senior center. It will depart at 8:15 p.m. sharp and return to the center at 4 p.m.

Artists reception Thursday

Artsy Fartsy Art Gallery will host an artist's reception featuring "Copper," abstracts by longtime artist Tom Shearer, from 4-7 p.m. Thursday at 220 A W. Telegraph St., Carson City. The public reception includes a wine-tasting paired with truffles provided by Carson City Confection. Light appetizers will be provided by the Artisan Cafe. For information, call 885-2787.

Community Garden celebrates 10 years

The Carson City Cooperative Extension and the Carson City community gardeners will host a 10th anniversary celebration at 5:15 p.m. Aug. 27 at the community garden east of Lone Mountain Cemetery on Beverly Drive.

Participants are asked to bring garden-motif food such as potato salad, salsa, cole slaw, sliced tomatoes, grilled vegetables - preferably if grown by the participant - or a garden-based entree to share. They should also bring their own beverage.

Concert fun in Dayton

A free concert, "Munch and Music," will be presented from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Dayton's Santa Maria Park. Concertgoers may bring blankets and chairs, and food will be sold.

The concert will feature musicians from the region who are donating their time and talents. Organizer Star Erickson of the Dayton Task Force said the musical lineup includes country, pop and folk. Nonprofits including local school Boosters, Community Roots and Soroptimists will offer smoothies, popcorn, and fresh fruits and vegetables from community gardens and organic farms in Lyon County.

The free event is being sponsored by the volunteers of the Dayton Task Force, a partner of Healthy Communities Coalition. Call Erickson at 246-7550 for more information. No alcohol or tobacco will be allowed at the event.

Musical fundraiser for Jonah

The Knights of Columbus, Council 4781, will host two concerts, "Four Tenors for Jonah Charity Concert," as fundraisers for Jonah Navarro, who is battling cancer, leaving the family struggling with medical expenses and everyday needs.

The first performance of Four Tenors for Jonah is at 7 p.m. Sept. 6 at St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Community, 3000 N. Lompa Lane, Carson City. Another performance will be at 7 p.m. Sept. 12 at St. Gall Catholic Church, 1343 Centerville Lane, Gardnerville. Tickets are $20 and available at the door on the night of the performance.

In addition, a trust account has been set up at Wells Fargo Bank, Account #1660942010. All proceeds from the concerts and account go to Jonah and his family.

Jonah was diagnosed with a high-grade cerebellar neuro epithelial tumor, which has spread to his spine. He is the oldest of six children in the Navarro family, and his condition was recently downgraded to terminal.

WPAC planning picnic

Widowed Persons Assocation, a support group for widowed men and women of all ages, will have its annual picnic Aug. 28.

WPAC promotes a wide range of social activities, giving widowed people the opportunity to make new friends and find redirection in their lives. Guests are welcome to see what the organization is about in a fun environment.

Rummage sale to benefit nursing scholarship fund

Carson City Emblem Club #507 will hold its annual rummage sale from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Aug. 27 at the Carson City Elks Lodge, 515 N. Nevada St., Carson City. Lunch will be available for purchase. This is a fundraising event for Western Nevada College nursing scholarships.

Members may drop off donations after 8 a.m. Aug. 26 at the Elks Lodge. Gently used small appliances, clothes for all ages, jewelry, toys, books, shoes, etc., are appreciated. For more information, call event chairwoman Cindy Byington at 882-2867.

Carson City Mint Coin Show this month

Coin collectors and numismatists from all over the country will flock to Carson City on Aug. 26-27 to buy the coveted Mint Mark "CC" coins and other collectibles during the annual Carson City Mint Coin Show.

Twenty-five dealers will be on hand from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, giving free appraisals and offering valuable wares to buy, sell, and trade. The show offers family fun with gold panning ($5 each) and a free children's treasure chest, jazz at noon Saturday, raffles, and demonstrations of Coin Press No. 1.

Admission is free for museum members and children 17 and under; non-member adult admission is $8 per day. The entrance fee includes the coin show and all exhibits. Famed swing teacher offers workshops

High Sierra Swing Dance Club presents a day of workshops by renowned West Coast swing instructor Michelle Kinkaid on Aug. 27 at the BreweryArts Center, 449 W. King St., Carson City.

Kinkaid will teach three workshops: 2 p.m., "When Is It OK to Play, and How?"; 3:15 p.m., "Dancing to the '1' in a Phrase"; and 4:30 p.m., "WCS Today and How it is Evolving." Cost is $20 for one workshop, or $50 for all three.

There will be a 90-minute dinner break at 7 p.m., and Kinkaid will teach a group intermediate WCS lesson for $10 for all dancers. From 8-10:30 p.m., HSSDC presents a social dance for $7 for any dance club member and $10 nonmembers.

Kinkaid is a three-time U.S. Open Classic Division Champion, winner of the U.S. Open Jack & Jill, two-time winner of the Phoenix Champion of Champions and a Feather Award recipient for the Best Classic Swing Dancer. She was voted "Queen of Swing" at the 1994 National New Year's Dance Championships and is an inductee into the World Swing Dance Council National Hall of Fame and the California Swing Dance Hall of Fame.

Nationally recognized Model T restorer to conduct seminar

The Silver State Model T Ford Club will host nationally recognized Model T engine restorer Milt Webb at a "get your Model T on the road" transmission reassembly seminar at 9 a.m. Sept. 24, at 35 Lewers Creek Road in west Washoe Valley.

"We're thrilled to have a mechanic of this caliber conduct this workshop for our club members and anyone else interested in the restoration of Model T Fords. Mr. Webb has many years of experience in restoring Model T Ford engines, transmissions and differentials and has written extensively about the vehicles," said club vice president Wendell Newman.

The seminar will be followed by a potluck lunch. All attendees are requested to bring a main dish or dessert to share.

Hopefest event set to raise funds for local cancer patients

Carson Tahoe Regional Healthcare Foundation introduces "Hopefest," a community fundraiser in honor of the Carson Tahoe Cancer Center's fifth anniversary. The event starts at 5 p.m. Sept. 9 on the grounds of the Cancer Center at the Carson Tahoe Medical Campus. All proceeds from Hopefest will directly support local cancer patients.

Funds raised through these events help patients like Christy Parish, mother of three, who was diagnosed with thyroid cancer at the age of 32.

"No words can express how grateful I am that the cancer center was there for me," said Parish. "The resource center helped me with housing during treatment and holds a special place in my heart."

Food, beer and wine donations were coordinated by Firkin & Fox and High Sierra Brewery, with proceeds going directly to patient-support initiatives.

Two live bands will be performing, including the Cutters, which consists of several Carson Tahoe physicians. The free event is open to the public and features food, drinks, dancing and music. Guests are encouraged to bring a lawn chair.

For the fourth year in a row, auto dealer Dick Campagni has donated a new car to be raffled off at the event. Raffle tickets are on sale now, one for $20 or six for $100. Additionally, attendees will be invited to plant a flag in the Healing Flag Garden in honor of a loved one touched by cancer.

Vivint Matching Donations To Austin's House

Vivint, a home automation company based in Salt Lake City, is conducting its annual Gives Back Project, which awards $1.25 million to local charities.

Vivint will match donations made to Austin's House before 11 p.m. Thursday. Donations must be made through the Vivint contest website, www.vivint.com/givesbackproject. There is no limit on the amount of the donation. Vivint will match up to $50 per donor up to a grand total of $1,800.

Austin's House has moved up to 11th place in the Pacific Region in the final round of the Vivint Gives Back Project on Facebook. Austin's House has a chance to win $100,000 for the most votes in the Pacific Region. However, Austin's House urgently needs people to vote once a day until Aug. 27 to move up in the standings.

To get started, just go to www.austinshouse.org and click on the orange heart icon on the right side of the home page. That will link to the Vivint web site. From there, sign in to your Facebook account, agree to "like" Vivint and allow additional permissions on Facebook. Then click on the vote box.

Austin's House is the only emergency children's shelter in rural Northern Nevada. The children are placed at Austin's House after being removed from their homes due to abuse or neglect. Warren Engine Co. No. 1 hosting fundraiser

History will mingle with music when the oldest continuously operating volunteer fire department in Nevada holds a fundraising event next month. The event will be held from 5-9 p.m. Sept. 23 in the Nevada Room at the Governor's Mansion.

Featured will be the unveiling of a recently restored circa 1900 chemical fire suppression cart. There also will be speakers who will talk about the distinguished history of Warren Engine Co. No. 1 volunteer fire department and its current museum with its magnificent collection of antique firefighting equipment.

Mike and the Liabilities band, led by retired Carson City District Court Judge Mike Griffin, will provide entertainment. There will be a ho-host bar, hors d'oeuvres, raffles and a silent auction.

The event is a benefit to enable Warren Engine Co. No. 1 to establish a larger museum to display its collection. The current museum is located at Fire Station No. 1, 777 S. Stewart St.
