130 YEARS AGO

On Friday a harness maker named McClure was on the train bound for Hawthorne and slightly intoxicated. When near Walker Lake he attempted to step from one car to another and missed his footing, falling off the train and rolling on some rocks. He was taken to Hawthorne where he died last evening. He leaves a family.

100 YEARS AGO

The official hanging of Patrick C. Casey will take place tomorrow at the State Prison. The official killing of this murderer will take place between 11 and noon. Casey made two requests this evening: first that the hangman not be paid. He did not want anyone hanging him that was just in it for the money and he wanted someone from the prison to put on the noose.

70 YEARS AGO

W. S. Bliss, member of a well-known Nevada pioneering family, passed away in Oakland last night. The deceased was a native of Gold Hill, a retired engineer and son of the late Duane Bliss Sr., pioneer lumberman of Glenbrook. The late Bliss had a part in the railroad between Glenbrook and Clear Creek Summit.

Winners of the Nevada Day Historical Essay Contest were announced today by Nevada Day Committee Chairman G. W. (Swede) Russell.

A record $5.4 billion in taxable gross revenue poured into Nevada casinos during 1991 fiscal year that ended June 10, a 10.2 percent increase over the previous year.

Gov. Kenny Guinn has activated the state's Emergency Operations Center to coordinate efforts by state agencies battling fires more than 150,000 acres of Nevada.
