Treasurer Kate Marshall has ordered $83.7 million transferred from the Unclaimed Property account to the state General Fund.

Her office announced in July that it had returned $32.8 million in unclaimed property and money to its rightful owners during the fiscal year that ended June 30.

She said Monday that both those amounts are a record. The cash released to the General Fund, she said, is 25 percent more than the $66 million the treasurer's office was able to transfer in the previous fiscal year. She said that money is now available for the state to support state programs.

Marshall said one of her goals as treasurer has been "to enhance the way the state of Nevada returned money to its rightful owners, which became even more critical as a result of the economic crisis."

The Unclaimed Property Division of the treasurer's office has more than $492 million in property and money being protected by the state. The rightful owners of that money can claim it at any time, and Marshall said they are encouraged to check whether they have property coming to them by going to https://nevadatreasurer.gov and clicking on the yellow Unclaimed Property box.
