Officials consider redevelopment funds for Ghost Walk

The Board of Supervisors will consider spending $12,000 from the Redevelopment Agency to support the Ghost Walk this year.

On June 6, the Redevelopment Authority Citizens Committee recommended funding the Ghost Walk, and the Redevelopment Authority recommended approval on Aug. 4.

Supervisors did not approve the funding, however, stating concerns that events relying on redevelopment funds to get started, needed to work toward self-sufficiency.

Since then, the applicant Mary Bennett, who was a founding member and has been involved in the event since the early 1990s, has provided information to address transitioning the event away from public funding assistance after this year.

Due to controversy over how the Carson City Convention and Visitors Bureau funds should be spent, the bureau's board voted to no longer produce the Ghost Walk.

And in an Aug. 11 letter from CCCVB Executive Director Candace Duncan to supervisors she says: "Any time that I and my staff spend on Ghost Walk ... will be on a volunteer basis on our own time outside of regular working hours."

The exception will be "to provide our lists of volunteer docents and guides and any other information that she might require to make this transition go smoothly," the letter reads.

In other action Thursday, the Board of Supervisors is scheduled to discuss or take action to:

• Present a proclamation to the Battle Born Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution for Constitution Week Sept. 17-23.

• As the Liquor and Entertainment Board, approve Stacy Reutzel as liquor manager for Smith's Food and Drug Store.

• Adopt on second reading three ordinances amending the code regarding business licenses.

• Accept the 2011 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice grant in the amount of $19,646.

• Approve the removal of taxes and penalties for Sierra Solar in the amount of $311,054.

• Approve on a second reading landfill, water, sewer and drainage fee increases.

• Approve the purchase and exchange of land in the amount of $595,000 involving David Leid and the Joost Land and Cattle Company.

• Approve a development agreement regarding a common open space known as the Schulz Ranch.

• Approve obtaining a 360-degree evaluation to use for the city manager during his January evaluation period.

• Adopt an ordinance increasing business license fees on electric services by 1 percent and natural gas by .5 percent effective Oct. 1.

• Supervisors will reconvene at 5:30 p.m. to appoint one member to the Historic Resources Commission. There are two candidates for the position, Jed Block and Elizabeth Dickey.
