The Appeal's readers suggest placing a tablet in the Washington Monument commemorating the state. With the Legislature appropriating $800 for the cause, citizens could raise thousands for a gold quartz stone with the word "Nevada" in silver letters on the "battle born" rock of the state.

Yesterday Game Warden Winters arrested two Basque sheepherders in the North Canyon west of here for damming the streams and turning the water, running undersized fish into bags. The men were released on a $75 bond.

There are Labor Day programs going on all over the state including a program at the Prison, where visitors can see sports and music from the east wall over the baseball field. Many Carsonites are going to Fallon where they will host "the biggest Nevada state fair ever."
50 YEARS AGO
California swept all of the speech honors at the first annual Mark Twain tall tale contest at Hunter's Lodge under the auspices of Toastmaster district 59. Winning the Mark Twain certificate with a rural "rube" story was Toastmaster area governor Robert Wakeman.

As asbestos abatement projects near completion in Carson City schools, two contractors involved insist 60-70 percent of asbestos still is in school buildings.

Dick Kirkland is named the new head of the Nevada Highway Patrol.
