Wolfpack takes second in Morgan Hill soccer tourney

The Carson Wolfpack finished second at the Platinum Level Magic Cup Soccer Tournament over the weekend in Morgan Hill.

The Wolfpack won its first three games, all by 3-0 scores, beating the Los Gatos Wildcats, Milpitas MXG and the MVLA Typhoons, to reach the championship game.

The locals lost a 1-0 heartbreaker to the Blue Shock, who have won four straight tournaments. The game-winning goal came with less than 30 seconds left in the match.

The team is made up of players from Carson City, Gardnerville and Reno.


First Tee offers after-school program

The First Tee of Northern Nevada is offering after school junior programs at Eagle Valley and Silver Oak golf courses during the month of September.

Classes at Eagle Valley take place Mondays and Wednesdays starting Sept. 7 and classes at Silver Oak will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays starting Sept. 6.

The cost is $80 for the month, and financial assistance is available. Golf equipment is provided for youngsters who need it.

Tennis tourney set for Sept. 16-18

The Carson Tennis Club is hosting its annual Fall Classic Sept. 16-18 at Centennial Park.

The tournament is open to players of all ages. If there is enough interest, players will be grouped so that players of all skill levels can be competitive. Also, if there is enough interest youth divisions will be scheduled.

The cost is $20 for singles and $30 for doubles. Two matches are guaranteed.

Runaway win in Silver Oak tourney

Terry Thomas, Jim Zewan, Jerry Johnson and Tony Barbaria combined to score 107 points to easily win the first round of the Silver Oak Senior Men's 4-man Stableford tournament on Aug. 28.

Pat Lantis, Doug Mcgilvray, Dennis Puccinelli and Jim Pursel were second at 102, while Gary Poley, David Montgomery, Wayne Feletar and Bill Challenger were third at 94.

Don Fox (2), Jim Feeney (6), Roger Cartwright (7), Cartwright (12) and Jim Barnett (14) were closest to the hole winners.

Cockerills triumph in 5-club scramble

Charlie and Kathy Cockerill finished with a 27.1 along with Dave and Brooke Nielsen to win Thunder Canyon's 5-club scramble on Aug. 28.

Second place went to Larry and Claudia Goodnight and Casey and Linda Escher with a 27.9. Steve and Kathy Archer and Peter Brunt and Jane Mellors were third with a 29.9.

On Aug. 26, the men's and women's club held their weekly events.

The team of Ron Ota, Matti Vazeen and Buz Allen won the variable best ball with a 155, three shots ahead of Tom Brennan, Burt Clements, Ron Babey and Ed Gladding. Third went to Jerry Hughes, Dan Culbert, Brian Sear and Steve Archer with a 160.

The ladies played individual stroke play, and Lynn Greenman and Bianca Daykin tied for first with a net 68. Sandi Oglesby and Virginia Bonar tied for third with 73s and Brooke Nielsen was fifth with a 74.


Pettersen wins Carson Valley Golf Club event

Dennis Pettersen shot a net 64 to win the 1-man scramble at Carson Valley Golf Club on Aug. 28.

Marc Prause shot 65 and Marc Menezes 66 to finish second and third in Flight A. Ewald Burmeister won Flight B with a 62, while Bruce Sandford, Charles Poe and Chuck Householder tied for second with a 69. Jack Zippwald and Steve Davis tied for the top spot in Flight C with a 70, while Larry Lockwood was third with a 71. Jim Arens was fourth with a 72.


Bagwell wins Empire Ranch crown

James Bagwell shot a 147 to win the low gross club championship at Empire Ranch recently.

John Tierney shot a net 129 to win Flight A. In Flight B, Henry Teague won low gross with a 158, while Tony Grinceri won low net with a 130. Henry Ortiz won C Flight low gross with a 168 while Martin Johnson was the low net winner with a 128. Marshall McCurdy won Flight D low gross with a 183, while Pete Youngdahl won low net with a 130.

The Empire men's club made a $200 donation to "Food For Thought" as part of the tournament.

Meanwhile, on Aug. 24 the Empire Senior Men's Club played an individual stroke play tournament.

John Tierney won Flight A with a net 63, three shots ahead of David Guy and Jim Barnett.

Bruce Serpa won Flight B with a 61, three shots ahead of Henry Teague. Bill Gibson was third with a 65 and Phillip King was fourth with a 65. Martin Johnson won Flight C with a 62, while Vern Rosse was second with a 65 and Henry Ortiz was third with a 66. Marshall McCurdy was the D Flight winner with a 61, Pete Youngdahl was second with a 66 and Phil Polaske took third with a 66.


Collins wins title in junior tourney

Emily Collins of Carson High won the girls 18 and under Challenger Division title at the Carson Tennis Club's Junior Satellite Tennis Tournament.

Collins is the top-ranked player on the Carson squad.

The other winners in the Challenger Division were - Nicholas Moller (12-and-under boys), Jessica Cohen (14-and-under girls), Sloan Walker (16-and-under girls) and Kenny Stark (14-16-18 boys combination). In the Novice Division, Marissa Cowan won the 16-18 combination crown, Trevor Sollberger won the 12-14-16 combination title and Hannah Kip won the girls 12-and-under crown.


BMX clinic offered

at Edmonds Park

A BMX clinic is scheduled for Sept. 1 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Edmond Sports Complex.

The clinic will be taught by Karl Clark, a BMX A pro, from Arizona. The clinic is open to riders of all ages. The cost is $25.
